Farmstead & Learning Center
Visitors
to Heritage Farmstead events can experience life as it was
lived in the early days of Iredell County. The site includes
a two-story log house, one-room cabin, smoke house, corn crib,
blacksmith shop, privy, hearth and kitchen garden along with
an adjacent one-room schoolhouse.
The
Heritage Learning Center is housed in the Old Pumphouse Station
across from the Farmstead.

Nature
Trail
Directly
across from the Heritage Farmstead, visitors can hike the
Nature Trail year round. The Nature Trail encompasses a native
ridge trail, wooden boardwalk around a natural bog and what
may be the last remaining wildflower site in the city. Visitors
are asked to leave flowers and plants undisturbed for others
to enjoy.
Adjoining
the Nature Trail is access to one of the City of Statesville
Greenway paths.

EXHIBITS/COLLECTION |
|
Collecting,
maintaining and ultimately exhibiting an outstanding permanent
collection are top priorities of the museum.
| While
current facilities do not allow space to exhibit the permanent
collection at this time, individual works are occasionally
rotated through the gallery. Please check the calendar
for scheduled showings. |
A
sampling from the museum's permanent collection contains artifacts
such as a tablecloth used in the Chester A. Arthur White House,
a seven-million-year-old petrified tree from a North Carolina
virgin forest, an extensive collection of WWI and WWII military
items, a pictorial collection from local photographers and
regional family scrapbooks.
The
museum welcomes inquiries regarding additions to the permanent
collection.

Back
Country educational tours are designed to meet school curriculum
goals and are centered around the seasons of the year; Spring
on the Farm, Fall Harvest and Back Country Christmas.
Students
discover the importance of a log structure on the farm and
may participate in such hands-on activities as carding wool,
sweeping, gathering firewood, churning butter, making a bed,
dipping candles, washing clothes or playing games. Children
attending class in the schoolhouse experience lessons in spelling,
arithmetic and reading from the school master.
For
more information or to schedule a tour, call (704) 873-4734.
